Description

The former Drill Hall located at 21 Sinclair Street in Thurso was possibly designed by Donald Leed around 1882, with alterations made by Sinclair McDonald and Son between 1938 and 1940. This building is a 2-storey, 7-bay structure, approximately rectangular in plan, and is designed in an early Renaissance style. As of 2015, it is used for both commercial and domestic purposes. The construction features squared coursed rubble with polished ashlar dressings, along with a string course and an eaves course.

On the principal (southeast) elevation, the central bay showcases a deeply moulded chamfered doorcase, with the outer moulding rising over a now unreadable panel above the door and terminating in label stops. Above this doorcase is a large round arched window, which also has hoodmoulding and label stops, and a wallhead chimney stack is positioned above. The windows have slightly raised margins with chamfered architraves; some include stone mullions, and there are round arched doors flanking the central bay. The ground floor features 3-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, while the first floor mainly has 2- and 3-pane glazing in timber fixed light windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are corniced chimney stacks.

The interior, partly observed in 2015, primarily dates from the late 19th century. The hallway and most rooms, including the drill hall on the first floor, have timber boarding up to head height. The hall's roof is supported by a delicate iron frame, and the ceiling is also timber boarded. Notable features include well-preserved 19th century chimneypieces in the hall and an adjacent room on the first floor, as well as a staircase with iron twist balusters and a timber rail.
