Description

8 Barrock Street in Thurso is a tall, 2-storey house with an attic, built in 1832. It features three bays and has a further 2-storey range extending from the northeast gable. The main block is constructed of coursed rubble with contrasting tooled and polished ashlar dressings, while the northeast range is made of rubble with tooled rubble dressings. The main façade faces southeast, with the rear elevation towards Barrock Street.

The main house has a slightly advanced central bay with chamfered angles, a corniced wallhead, and a central blocking course. The entrance features a panelled door with a decorative fanlight, which is sheltered by a portico supported by a pair of Roman Doric columns. There are single windows on the ground and first floors facing Patersons Lane, and the symmetrical rear elevation includes a blocked central door that has been converted into a window. The windows have 12-pane glazing, and there are panelled and corniced end stacks, with the right stack dated with a palmette motif and the left featuring entwined rose, thistle, and shamrock designs. The roof is covered with Caithness slate.

The northeast range, known as 6 Barrock Street, has two windows raised through the wallhead, one of which has been enlarged, and some blind windows. The rear has eight bays with two blocked doors, along with ridge and end stacks, and a West Highland slate roof.

Inside, the main house boasts a decorative plaster ceiling in the entrance hall, along with decorative plaster cornices and centre roundels in the drawing and dining rooms. There is a cantilevered semi-circular stair with decorative cast-iron balusters. A re-used late 17th century carved stone chimney piece in the dining room features a central shield flanked by lions passant, along with a rose and thistle, and has a crude egg and dart border with half round moulding.

The property also includes gate piers and garden walls, with a pedestrian entrance from Patersons Lane. The entrance features a pair of tooled ashlar gate piers topped with ogee caps and ball finials, along with coped rubble garden walls.
