Eastern Cottage, East Range, Glenfinnan Steading

The barn and steading at Glenfinnan, designed by Ross and Joass in 1861, possibly incorporates earlier work. It is a long, two-storey rectangular structure that features livestock accommodation on the ground floor and storage on the first floor. The north gable connects to the sloping site via a short bridge that provides access to the first-floor entrance.

To the east and west, there are long, lower single-storey ranges with five and six bays, respectively. The five-bay range to the east was converted into three holiday accommodation units around 1980. The building is constructed of pinned grey rubble with tooled grey granite dressings. The central barn range shows random rubble masonry on the ground floor of the east elevation, where a lean-to extension has recently been removed.

A segmental-headed entrance is located in the centre of the long east elevation. The north gable features a tall pointed-headed entrance on the first floor with double leaf plank doors that have long iron hinges. The south gable includes a central ground floor entrance to the stock accommodation, with a long loft door directly above and a gablet quatrefoil vent. There is a louvred window with a shallow pointed head in the centre of the first floor on the east elevation, mirrored on the west.

A six-bay single-storey stable wing extends to the west, ending in an outer gabled bay that has a pointed-headed carriage house entrance, also with double leaf plank doors and long iron hinges. The five-bay east range has been converted into three dwellings, featuring enlarged openings for windows and doors on both the north and south sides, along with three entrances in the north elevation, each with a slated canopied porch extending from the roof line. The building has multi-pane glazing, modern skylights in the residential wing, and retains some original triangular louvred vents on the west side, all under slate roofs.
