Description
The stables at Rosehaugh House are a large courtyard range built at various times, featuring one and two storeys. The structure is made of snecked, dressed red rubble with polished ashlar dressings. Originally constructed in the mid 19th century in a U-plan layout, the stables were remodeled and extended by Alexander Ross in 1874 and extensively altered in the style of William Flockhart around 1900.
The surviving section of the original mid 19th century U-plan is the east block, which is built of rubble and has blocked windows. The 1874 reconstruction includes the north side of the square, characterized by short screen walls and rusticated gate piers. The west block was remodeled with dormer heads and service courts added around 1900, reflecting the English Arts and Crafts style.
The north and west ranges were rebuilt, featuring a gabled two-storey design with a prominent battered chimney on the north face, as well as mullioned and bipartite windows. The long south elevation is a single storey with seven bays and an off-centre advanced two-storey shaped gable. The eastern four bays house the stables, which have crenellation and small mullioned windows, along with tall, battered rectangular chimneys. A large squat drum tower is located at the southeast corner, topped with a conical roof and featuring an elaborately carved doorway flanked by a window. The roofs are covered with slate, although there is a modern roof over the courtyard.
