Description
This is a memorial to Harriet, Duchess of Sutherland, dated 1872 and located within the grounds of Dunrobin Castle. It comprises a tall, pinnacled Gothic tabernacle, constructed from polished ashlar. The memorial sits upon a high, square, buttressed plinth. A gabled, crocketted canopy with ornate Gothic detailing extends above the bust, which in turn rises to a tall, facetted spire featuring further Gothic ornamentation. The memorial contains a bronze bust of Duchess Harriet. Inscriptions around the base read: “Lady Harriet Howard Second Duchess of Sutherland, 1806-68”. The foundation stone was laid by Queen Victoria in 1872.
