Description

The Northern Barn at Mains of Applecross is a pair of hay and threshing barns dating from the late 18th century. Both barns are oriented north to south, with the northern barn possibly being the older of the two. They are constructed of coursed drystone with square rubble, featuring low walls that have a noticeable external batter. The barns include wide wall vents that are filled with rough vertical half-cut staves, which have replaced the original wattling. Each barn has central doorways and piended roofs.

The northern barn measures 55 feet by 19 feet and has a wallhead height of 5 feet 6 inches, topped with a corrugated iron roof. Inside, there is a modern silage pit that takes up part of the floor space. The southern barn is larger, measuring 62 feet 6 inches by 19 feet, with a wallhead height of 6 feet 9 inches and a thatched roof over felt. This barn features a cemented floor.
