Description
East Mill in Forss is an early 19th century mill range that includes a miller's house from the early to mid-19th century. The buildings are situated on a southwest sloping site that faces Forss Water. The mill itself is three stories tall with a six-bay southwest front and features a two-storey addition projecting from the northwest gable at the rear. The exterior is constructed of harl pointed rubble.
The mill has an off-centre door and reasonably regular window arrangement, although some windows have been blocked. The windows feature either shuttering or 12-pane glazing, and the roof is made of piended Caithness slate. A mill lade runs close in front of the building, serving an overshot wheel located at the west end of the mill.
The miller's house is set back from the southeast gable of the mill and has an entrance in a small porch located in a re-entrant. It is a two-storey, asymmetrical structure with three bays, built from thin rubble flagstone with polished flagstone dressings and margins. The right bay has a slightly advanced gable with a single window on the ground floor, two windows on the first floor, and a stack at the apex. There are two additional first-floor windows that break the eaves in gabletted dormers. A single-storey extension is located at the right gable, featuring a loft door in the centre of the gable (at ground floor level due to the slope of the site) and a rear wall made of large single stone slabs. The house has a ridge stack and a Caithness slate roof.
