Description
The building is a railway station in Tain, designed by Joseph Mitchell and Co in 1864. It is a single-storey structure with an H-plan layout, constructed from rubble with tooled dressings.
The station features a seven-bay frontage facing Station Road, with a wide recessed central bay that includes angle pilasters and a pair of slender cast-iron columns. This central bay is flanked by two narrow bays and end gables that contain tripartite windows.
On the platform side, the station has block pedimented tripartite windows in the end gables, which are connected by a canopy supported by six cast-iron columns that are similar to those on the street facade. The windows are fitted with two and four-pane sashes, and the building has squat ridge and end stacks, topped with a slate roof.
