Description
Glenurquhart Secondary School in Drumnadrochit is a long, single-storey school building, likely designed by Alexander Ross in the later 19th century. It faces south and is flanked at either end by single-storey and attic, three-bay schoolhouses. The structure is built of red sneck coursed rubble, featuring contrasting tooled sandstone dressings and long and short detailing.
The central school block has nine bays, with the outer and central bays slightly advanced and two entrances located in projecting porches that abut the outer gables. The outer gables have paired long pointed-headed windows, while the center features similar triple windows. All the smaller windows throughout the building have pointed heads. Each schoolhouse has a central door beneath a bargeboarded slated canopy, with flanking pointed-headed windows that match those of the main school. Segmental-headed windows are present in the outer bays, rising into gablets. The glazing consists of four-pane windows, with multi-pane glazing in the long windows. The gables include blind trefoil vents, and the building has coped ridge and end stacks, topped with slate roofs that have projecting eaves.
The school is fronted by cast-iron spearhead railings with matching gates and slender octagonal cast-iron gate piers. Coped rubble garden walls enclose the schoolhouses, featuring paired gates and similar gate piers as those at the school.
