Description
The Christian Science Church, located at 1 La Belle Place in Glasgow, was designed by Charles Wilson in 1857 and is now a Hindu Mandir. This building features a Renaissance style and is situated on a corner site. It has three rows of nine unequal bays, with a painted ashlar exterior and a rear elevation made of droved ashlar. The structure has a single volume rectangular plan, with two storeys at the rear and a sunk basement.
The continuous ground floor is characterized by a pilastraded arcade, topped with a solid moulded cornice transom that includes a Greek key frieze. The wide arches facing La Belle Place and the outer bays on Clifton Street are adorned with stylised acroteria, while sculpted tympana can be found on the Clifton Street side. There is a basement band course that connects to the ground floor cill band. The eaves feature an entablature with a sculpted frieze by Mossman, which depicts the progress of the Arts, and there is a dentil cornice above. The parapet includes dies, and both the north and south elevations have pediments incised with lettering on the south side.
On the elevation facing La Belle Place, there is a central entrance bay with an architraved door, a panel, and a lunette above, flanked by two oblong stair lights. The elevation to Clifton Street features seven central glazed bays with sculpted tympana topped by carved heads. The southern entrance bay has a chamfered panel above, and there are plain windows on La Belle Allee. The entry to La Belle Allee is corniced and architraved, featuring a door and fanlights.
The interior has been gutted and refitted. The property also includes ashlar gate and railing piers, a cast-iron balustrade, and cast-iron lamp standards.
