Description

3 Somerset Place in Glasgow is a classical terraced block designed by John Baird I, begun in 1840. The building consists of 2-storey and basement, 3-bay houses that are raised to 3-storey at the two central houses and at the flatted ends. The eastern pavilion has been demolished and replaced. The structure features 44 bays arranged in a pattern of 5-15-6-15, with 6 return bays to Clifton Street arranged as 1-1-2-2, and one return bay is blind. The exterior is made of ashlar, partly painted, and has a channelled appearance at the ground floor of the western pavilion and at the basement of the main block, with flat arches over the windows.

Each entrance on the main front is accessed by steps that oversail the basement area. The entrances feature Ionic columned porticos with Doric responds and fanlights at Nos 7, 8, and 14. The doorways at Nos 2-6 and 9-13 are ramped, architraved, consoled, and corniced, with fanlights and recessed pilasters. There are two pilastered corniced doorways at Nos 2 and 4 Clifton Street. A basement band runs along the building.

The eastern ground floor windows are framed in architraves with corbelled cills. There is a cill band at the first floor, and the windows in the central section are corniced and pedimented. A cill band is also present at the third floor. The building features an eaves cornice and a balustraded parapet, which has been partially removed in lower sections, while the raised sections have a complete parapet. Some dormers are set back, and there are end and ridge stacks.

Inside, No 14 has a corniced vestibule with a consoled band, while No 13 features a Greek Ionic hall screen. Many of the houses have a Corinthian carved timber screen at the first floor. The property is also adorned with cast-iron spear-headed railings.
