Description

10 Great George Street in Glasgow is a pair of detached square classical villas built around 1852, divided into two flats. The left villa includes 10 Great George Street and 63 Bank Street, while the right villa contains 2 and 4 Great George Street. Access to the upper flats is provided by an external stone stair at the rear, with the ground floor entrance located on Great George Street.

The villas feature droved ashlar facades and coursed ashlar flanks, with two main facades for each house. The central entrance bay is slightly advanced and topped with a plain parapet. The entrance doorpiece is lugged, architraved, and corniced, leading to a deeply recessed door adorned with a panelled and rosette architrave and a fanlight. The ground floor windows are grouped and feature lugged architraves with bracketed cills. The central ground floor windows on the side elevation are consoled and pedimented, while all flank windows are architraved. The villas have sash windows, with No. 2 featuring lying-pane glazing and No. 10 using plate glass glazing.

A continuous heavy cornice and blocking course run along the main facades, with a band course at the eaves of the flanks and rear. The stacks have an unusual treatment, with the gable walls built up between axial stacks, featuring roll-moulded blind panels and coped gables. The roofs are slate and the flues are plain.
