Description

Janefield Cottage is a two-storey, roughly T-plan cottage ornée villa, possibly designed by architect John Brash around 1840, with an addition of a bay window to the rear elevation circa 1850. It is set on a narrow, wedge-shaped plot that slopes steeply between Otago Street and the River Kelvin. The exterior is constructed of painted droved stone, featuring painted ashlar pilasters between the bays on the front elevation. The cottage has distinctive decorative timber bargeboards along the gable eaves and a decorative timber hood over the front door. There are small canted bays at the entrance level on the east and south elevations.

The east elevation has 12-pane lying pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, while other elevations feature larger pane glazing in similar windows. The roof is covered with grey slates. A notable feature on the front elevation is an unusual arrangement of three hexagonal shafted wallhead stacks that are linked at the cornice level with yellow clay cans. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not seen during the listing review in 2014.
