Description
Provan Hall, located on Auchinlea Road in Glasgow, is a house that likely dates from the late medieval period and retains a significant amount of its early fabric. The building consists of two parallel blocks connected by screen walls that enclose a courtyard. It is constructed of rubble, with the southern block harled, and features ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The National Trust for Scotland undertook restoration work throughout the 1980s.
The northern range is thought to be from the 15th or, more probably, the 16th century. It includes Renaissance details that may have been added to an earlier structure. This range is crow-stepped and has two storeys, with upper windows that break through the eaves and have pedimented dormer heads. The openings are chamfered, and there is a conical-roofed drum turret at the southeast outer angle, which has shot-holes. There is a possibly reconstructed forestair at the eastern end of the courtyard, along with three doors leading to the courtyard at ground level and three coped apex stacks, the most substantial of which is on the western side.
The southern range appears to be from the mid-18th century, although the harling may conceal earlier work. It has two storeys with an attic and a symmetrical three-bay southern front. There are steps leading to a central doorway, which features a key-stoned lugged architrave with a pediment. The windows are sash with lying-panes, and there are a pair of piended canted dormers with similar glazing, possibly dating from around 1840. The roof may be contemporary, lacking skews and projecting over the gables, and there are a pair of end stacks. The interior is quite handsome, featuring an 18th-century timber stair, and there is a small garden at the front.
The screen walls include a western wall that appears largely rebuilt and modern, though it likely sits on early footings or foundations. The eastern wall also shows signs of rebuilding, though it is less recent. A wide round-arched Renaissance gateway is centrally located, featuring Renaissance moulding and possibly dated by a 1647 pediment set over a bolection-moulded frame, which is associated with the Hamilton crest and the initials "RH," as the family acquired the estate in 1593. The coping slabs have moulded ends.
