Description

West Lodge at Gartloch Hospital in Glasgow is a single-storey gate lodge built around 1892 by Thomson and Sandilands. The building showcases a French Renaissance style with Arts and Crafts details, constructed from red snecked sandstone. It has an L-shaped plan with an entrance in a re-entrant.

On the northeast elevation, there is a canted bay featuring a base course and transomed windows. The half-timbered gable extends to the front of the bay and is supported by paired wooden brackets. The plain bargeboards have projecting heads of purlins. To the left, a screen wall descends in stages, with two balustraded heads topped with terminal ball finials; the first head has a slot detail similar to that found on the boiler house, with a blank oculus beneath. To the right of the bay, the screen wall leads to a gate pier and a bipartite window that rests on an ogee corbelled base, topped by a pediment and a plain frieze, with a balustrade and a ball finial to the left. At the rear of the wall, there is a stone seat in the re-entrant.

The gate pier is banded and features a shallow round-headed interrupted recess, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course with a modern lamp.

On the west elevation, the doorway is set in the re-entrant behind the screen wall, leading to a flat-roofed porch that has a bipartite window with mullions and transoms, along with a balustrade and ball finials. To the right, there is a gable with a tripartite window that has mullions and transoms, topped with a cornice. The gable features a moulded cope and is flanked by ball finials. A prominent chimney stack is located on the north wing of the L, with corner pilasters flanking round-headed blind features, a plain entablature with a cornice, and a chamfered head.

The rear elevation is plain.
