Description

Garthamlock Water Tower consists of two large, circular-plan, reinforced-concrete water towers that share a similar design but differ in height. They are prominently situated next to each other on elevated ground in a suburban area to the east of Glasgow.

The Garthamlock Water Tower was designed by Frank A Macdonald and Partners for Glasgow Corporation between 1953 and 1956, and built by Holst and Company Ltd from 1956 to 1958. It features 24 laterally unsupported cylindrical columns that rise to 100 feet. The cylindrical tank measures 23 feet in height and has a capacity of 1 million gallons, with seven equally spaced band courses. There is a hexagonal-plan central access column with moulded margins around the openings, which were infilled in 2012. A metal door is located at the ground level, and there are internal metal stairs leading to the rooftop.

The Craigend Water Tower, built around 1966 for the Lower Clyde Water Board, has 12 fin-like supporting columns that taper towards the ground and stand at 40 feet tall. Its cylindrical tank features four equally spaced band courses and regularly disposed rectangular insets at the lower course. The central column is dodecagonal (12-sided) and panelled. It also has a metal access door at ground level and internal stairs that rise to the rooftop.
