Description

The Public Baths and Washhouse, located at 75-89 Whitevale Street in Glasgow, was designed by the Glasgow Office of Public Works, with A B McDonald as the City Surveyor and William Sharp as the assistant. It opened on 17 May 1902 and is built in the Baroque style. The building features a three-storey central block with five bays, flanked by two-storey, three-bay wings. The main elevation facing Whitevale Street is symmetrical, with central bays that include two canopied and consoled doors. Above the first-floor central window is an inscription reading 'Whitevale Baths,' and at the apex is a gable with carved arms of Glasgow.

The structure is constructed of red brick, accented with polished red sandstone ashlar dressings and details, as well as polished terrazzo below the cill course of the ground floor. Architectural features include a base course, ground floor cill course, string course, first floor cill course, and an eaves course, all arranged similarly on the third floor. The parapet has curvilinear details, and plain pilasters separate the bays. The ground floor is characterized by an Ionic colonnade, while the first floor has wide segmental arched keystoned windows.

The original small pane metal glazing is still visible in some areas, although most exterior windows are boarded up. The building has replacement roofing materials, and a block with a chimney on East John Street has been demolished.

Inside, the men's pool is top-lit and features white tiled walls with colored horizontal bands, along with decorative metal roof trusses.
