Bellgrove Hotel, 607 Gallowgate, Glasgow

The Bellgrove Hotel, located at 607 Gallowgate in Glasgow, is a five-storey building designed by C J McNair & Elder between 1935 and 1937. This striking Moderne structure was originally a working men's hostel and features a courtyard plan. The southern and eastern elevations are adorned with cream and black banded tiles at the ground floor, with alternating bands of brick and white painted cement above. The northern and western elevations are harled, and all floors have cill courses.

On the southern (principal) elevation, there is an off-centre curved entrance with a recessed doorway and a large curved flat-roofed canopy above. To the left, there is a single bay taller section. The eastern elevation includes a 10-bay section with a rounded corner at the far left; the tiling at the ground floor stops at the entrance doorway in the second bay. The right side is harled, featuring a single bay recessed section, a two-bay advanced section, and another two-bay recessed section. The northern elevation is plain and harled, with blank sections and advanced parts to the left. The western elevation is also plain and harled or painted, partially obscured by adjacent shops.

The building predominantly retains its original metal-framed 8-pane casement windows. Inside, the hotel features a largely original interior. The former restaurant and lounge are located on the ground floor within the flat-roofed section of the courtyard. From the first to the fourth floors, rooms are arranged off four narrow corridors that follow the building's perimeter, with some rooms overlooking the courtyard. The rooms are exceptionally small, designed for a single bed, a wash hand basin, and a radiator, with some original radiators still in place. Double rooms, intended for men only, are located at the corners of the building.
