Description
Anderston Free Church, located at 9 University Avenue in Glasgow, was designed by James Sellars of Campbell Douglas & Sellars between 1876 and 1878. It features Normandy Gothic architecture and has undergone alterations by Keppie, Henderson & Partners from 1961 to 1963. In 1996-1997, it was converted into the Gilmorehill Centre by SBT Keppie. The church is constructed from stugged coursed ashlar with polished ashlar dressings.
The building includes a nave with low five-bay aisles. On the west side, there are five tall gabled three-light plate-tracery windows above the aisles, accompanied by small lancet windows in the aisles. The east side has four clerestory windows separated by flying buttresses, with the lower walls also heavily buttressed. To the south, there are single-storey halls that are at right angles to the main body of the church. A pointed arch doorpiece is located in the re-entrant angle. The truncated tower, which was never completed, rises to only two stages and features a pointed arch entrance with nook shafts, as well as two leaded glass windows at its base.
The roofs are covered with grey slate.
Inside, as of 1988, the interior has been much altered with few original fittings remaining. A five-arch arcade supported on piers separates the nave from the aisles, while the subsidiary halls have an open timber roof. The main hall has a false suspended ceiling.
