Description
Hillhead Congregational Church, located at 1 University Avenue in Glasgow, was designed by Hugh Barclay of H & D Barclay and built between 1889 and 1895. This French Gothic church features aisles and has its main facades facing Gibson Street and University Avenue. The exterior is constructed from stugged and snecked ashlar with polished ashlar margins and a bull-faced basement.
The north elevation on Gibson Street has three tiers, including a buttressed basement and aisle, with a clerestory above. It consists of a five-bay aisle, with the center bay flanked by buttresses and a gablet window. The clerestory windows display Y tracery. To the left of this elevation is an advanced gabled entrance bay, which features a shouldered doorpiece flanked by narrow lancet windows. The east side has a shallow canted apse with a piended roof.
On the west elevation facing University Avenue, buttresses rise to pinnacles and flank gablet windows on either side of a gabled pointed arch portal. This portal has engaged column reveals and a moulded soffit, with paired doors below. Above, tall tracery windows also feature engaged column reveals.
The interior, as seen in 1986, has undergone significant alterations and includes modern internal partitioning. Five polished granite columns separate the nave from the aisles. Two stained glass windows remain on the north side, but there are few original fittings left.
