Description
Anderston Kelvingrove Parish Church, a Church of Scotland, is located at 759 Argyle Street, Little Street, and Grace Street in Glasgow. Designed by Honeyman, Jack and Robertson, it was built between 1965 and 1968, with internal alterations made by the same architects in 1976. The church features a two-storey, square plan with a prominent pyramidal roof and includes adjoining ancillary accommodation. This consists of lower two-storey office space on the north elevation, a double-height rectangular church hall to the northwest, and a roughly L-shaped linking block between the church and hall, which has a distinctive shuttered and precast concrete slatted bell tower on the east elevation. The building is situated in the center of a city housing estate.
The church is constructed with a reinforced concrete frame and has brown brick infills. The office section is finished with cement render. The glazing features bespoke timber frames that create a strip of windows set below the concrete frame, with full-height glazing in the center bays of the east elevation of the church. Some tilt and turn windows made of timber are present in the ancillary accommodation. The pyramidal roof is covered with replacement anodised aluminium panels on a timber structure, while the ancillary accommodation has a flat roof with asbestos felt. The church hall is topped with bespoke pyramidal rooflights.
The interior, as seen in 2013, is characterized by bespoke hardwood fixtures and fittings along with brown brick walls. The church is located on the first floor and features a stepped rectangular dais made of brown brick laid on in situ cast concrete, which includes an integral hardwood pulpit on a brick base and a hardwood communion table. The church has a pyramid roof with an exposed hardwood timber frame, and there are hardwood and glazed partitions separating the church from the meeting rooms. The ground floor screen walls are constructed of concrete blocks with an open cross crosslet pattern.
