Description

The Administration Block of the Southern General Hospital, located at 1345 Govan Road in Glasgow, was designed by James Thomson and built between 1867 and 1872. This former poorhouse features a long, symmetrical, 35-bay, three-storey structure with a roughly T-shaped plan. It is notable for its distinctive French pavilion-roofed bays and a central clock tower, which is now part of the Southern General Hospital established in 2012. The building is constructed from coursed, snecked, and stugged sandstone with ashlar dressings, and includes band courses, a cill course, and a dentilled cornice, along with raised cills. There are also various later 20th-century extensions and infill buildings.

The principal elevation faces east and features a central, well-advanced, single-storey entrance bay with a parapet, adorned with a Doric portico and canted three-light windows at the corners. The distinctive square-plan, six-stage central clock tower is located just behind this elevation and includes louvred bipartite windows at the fourth stage, with curved gables above that display clocks on all sides. The top stage of the tower has a pyramidal roof topped with an iron pinnacle. The advanced pavilion bays are regularly spaced along the elevation, each topped with iron-crested French roofs. The windows are predominantly plate-glass and include four-over-four pane timber sash and case designs. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are corniced stacks.
