Description

Kings Gate, located at 35 Victoria Crescent Road in Dowanhill, Glasgow, is a pair of asymmetrical terraced houses designed by architect David Barclay in 1902. These two-storey homes feature attics and a low basement, constructed from polished red sandstone, with the basement finished in stugged stone. The house at No 35 has been stone cleaned, while No 37 aligns with Victoria Crescent Road.

The façade of No 35 has three bays, while No 37 has two bays facing Kings Gate and a three-bay entrance elevation towards Victoria Crescent Road. Access to the entrance is via balustraded steps leading to a centrally placed Roman Doric porch, which is supported by polished red granite columns. The doorpiece features rounded edges, with a double-leaf panelled door flanked by narrow sidelights. To the left of the porch, there is a corniced square projecting window with three lights on the ground floor. To the right, a two-storey canted window with a facetted roof is present, while No 37 has small leaded lights to the right of its door. The first-floor windows of both houses are bipartite and feature flat architraves.

No 37's two-bay elevation facing Kings Gate has windows arranged similarly to No 35. The sash windows include lower sashes made of plate glass, with some upper sashes and sidelights featuring leaded coloured glass. There are continuous moulded band courses above the ground floor and a band course at the eaves, with timber-bracketed eaves. No 37 also has a bipartite dormer. The houses have corniced axial stacks with octagonal cans and slate roofs, complemented by red tile ridges and finials on the canted roofs.

The rear elevation of No 35 is finished in stugged ashlar and features single-storey canted bay windows. The property includes a communal driveway shared with No 33 Kings Gate, marked by two pairs of round capped ashlar gatepiers, with the right pair topped with ball finials. No 37 is bordered by a low polished ashlar wall that encloses its garden.
