Description

Camphill Queen's Park Church, located at 20 Balvicar Drive in Glasgow, was designed by William Leiper and constructed between 1875 and 1878, with the soaring stone spire completed in 1883. Originally known as Camphill United Presbyterian Church, it is situated on a corner site and was built adjacent to a hall from 1873, the architect of which is unknown.

The church showcases a Normandy Gothic style, featuring impressive sculptural details primarily executed by MacCulloch and Co of London. The building is constructed of snecked ashlar with polished dressings and has slate roofs. The tower, positioned at the corner, has massive buttressed lower stages, a tall offset and open belfry stage, and an octagonal stone spire. The main gabled front faces Balvicar Drive and includes buttresses, a recessed door in a gabled porch with nook-shafts, and a pair of tall traceried windows above, along with a winged figure by Mossman, all set within a large shallow arch. There are simpler doorways on either side, with the one to the right located in the tower. The church also features a twin-gabled shallow wide transept facing Balvicar Street.

Inside, the church has a galleried interior with stone columns that have decorative capitals. An extensive original stencilling scheme by Leiper remains on the high timber-vaulted roof, although the walls have been whitewashed. A notable feature is a 3-light leaded window. The interior also includes pointed aisle arcades, stone columns with foliated capitals, a large decorative pulpit with a canopy, and an organ set on the gallery.

The hall has a gable facing Balvicar Drive and its south flank is oriented towards Queen's Park.
