Public House, 69 Hutcheson Street, Glasgow

Ralston and McColl is a commercial building located at 60 Glassford Street in Glasgow, likely designed by architects R and J Adam around 1790, with later alterations made to the ground floor and roof. This four-storey structure, which features a full attic above the main cornice, has a six-bay by four-bay layout and was originally used for both commercial and domestic purposes. The ground floor once had an arcade, but a modern mansard attic has been added, which detracts from its original character. The building is constructed of painted ashlar stone, with rustication at the ground level facing Wilson Street and on two return bays to the east and west. The ground floor has depressed arch openings.

On the south elevation facing Wilson Street, giant Ionic pilasters frame broad bays on the first and second floors, with the outer bays slightly advanced. The inner bays each contain two windows that are architraved and corniced on the first floor. The outer bays feature three-light windows, with the first floor adorned with an applied order, blind balustrades, and pediments above the central lights. The outer bays on the third floor have Diocletian windows.

The return elevations to the east and west have Burlington windows in the first two bays on the first floor, with three-light windows in each bay of the second and third floors. There are single windows above ground level in two bays on the north side return. The sash and case windows have a plate-glass glazing pattern.

The roof is finished with a slated mansard, which includes flat-roofed, two-light dormers.

Inside, the bar at 62 Glassford Street was remodelled in 1938. It features an entrance lobby with doors leading to the lounge and bar area. The bar is lined with polished timber panelling, which also encloses square-plan pillars. The ceiling is flat with timber strapwork, and there is a bar counter along the south wall. Timber doors provide access to the lavatories. The smaller lounge has a timber panelled dado and a stained glass window depicting the Queen Mary, a Clyde-built Cunard liner, with a Spitfire flying above. There is bench seating in both the bar and lounge, along with original tables and depressed-arch window recesses.
