Description

157-167 Hope Street in Glasgow is a commercial corner block designed by John A Campbell in 1902, featuring 7 and 8 stories with applied Renaissance detailing. The building is constructed of polished ashlar, with the first floor channelled. The elevation facing Hope Street consists of 9 bays arranged in a 1-2-3-2-1 pattern, while the elevation to West George Street has an asymmetrical design with 4 western bays detailed similarly to those on Hope Street. The ground floor mainly houses modern shops, and there is a central main entrance on Hope Street that features a sculpted head.

On the Hope Street elevation, there are 5 central second-floor windows with a solid balcony. The three central bays are grouped with advanced aedicules framing the outer windows, and these bays are further advanced on the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors. The outer bays feature oriel windows that rise from the 2nd to the 7th floors. The aediculed windows have open segmental pediments and sculpted tympana at the 6th floor, along with a sculpted eaves frieze that breaks through the main cornice and obelisk finials. The top two floors of the 7 inner bays are linked by a pilastered arcade and a corbelled balcony, with the 6th and 7th floor windows being deeply recessed and a deep cornice above.

The elevation to West George Street includes a bowed, turretted section in the 2nd bay from the east, topped with a bell-cast roof, and features a corniced wallhead stack to the left.
