Description

The United Kingdom Provident Building, located at 122-128 St Vincent Street in Glasgow, was redeveloped by John A Campbell in 1906. This seven-storey, five-bay commercial building features a classical style with baroque details and includes ground floor shops. The bays are arranged in a 1-3-1 pattern, with the outer sections being taller and projecting forward at the fifth floor. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, which is channelled at the first floor.

The central entrance is flanked by sculpted cartouches and features a lintel above. The façade includes a giant order of fluted Ionic pilasters that rise from the second to the fourth floor. All windows are set within architraves: the first floor windows have keyblocked details, the second floor windows are corniced, and the third floor windows have lugged architraves with raised lintels and plain outer windows with aprons. The fourth floor features open, keyblocked segmental pedimented windows with dropped architraves, while the outer bays are plain. A cornice projects over the pilasters and supports balustraded balconies on the fifth floor in the central bays, with corniced windows and dropped architraves in the outer bays. The sixth floor windows are open pedimented, both segmental and triangular, with keyblocked details in the central bays and raised outer bays, featuring aediculed windows with open shaped pediments and sculpted cartouches.

The rear elevation showcases six simple yet striking seven-storey oriels made of light yellow brick, creating a remarkable composition. During alterations in 1980-1981, the original oriel profiles were recreated using modern materials.
