Description

188, 190, and 192 West George Street in Glasgow is a six-storey office building designed by Robert A Bryden in 1899, showcasing a free classical style. The building features five unequal bays, which are symmetrical up to the third floor, with the outer bays canted at that level. It is constructed of polished red ashlar and has sash and case windows set within simple architraves.

The central entrance is marked by swept parapet walls at the top of the steps, leading to a keyblocked arched entrance framed by a coupled column doorpiece and an open scroll pediment that includes relief sculpture in the tympanum. The ground floor also has plain flanking windows and a cornice.

On the first floor, the windows are set on a cill band, and there is a sculpted parapet above the outer bays. The central canted bay features an escutcheon that breaks through the carved parapet of the second floor. The second floor has scroll pediments with sculpted tympana above the outer bays and arched windows in the center.

The third floor includes a central colonnaded gallery with recessed glazing and a sculpted balcony, topped by figure sculpture in a broken segmental pediment. There is a bold modillion cornice at this level. The fourth and fifth floors are asymmetrical, with a canted balcony in the southern bay, an arched window in a cavetto recess above, and an elaborately sculpted shaped pediment with a clasping stack. The northern bays are also canted, featuring shaped lintels at the fifth floor and a sculpted pediment. The building is capped with a bell-cast roof and a finial, and there is recessed attic glazing in the central bays.
