Description
The Free College Mission, located at 329-345 North Woodside Road in Glasgow, was built around 1879 as the Mission Hall of Free College Church. It served as the founding site of the Boys Brigade in 1883, which continued to meet there until December 1973. This three-storey building features stugged ashlar with polished ashlar margins and has been stone cleaned. The elevation facing North Woodside Road consists of six bays.
Notable architectural elements include a pointed arch portal with granite nook shafts and a shouldered doorpiece topped with a hoodmould. The ground floor has paired pointed arch windows, while the first floor features shouldered and mullioned windows. The second floor windows are set in individual gablets, paired, and have trefoil heads beneath pointed arch hoodmoulds. Additional details include string courses at the cills, a plain main cornice, skewputts, and slate roofs.
A plaque at ground floor level commemorates Sir W A Alexander, the founder of the Boys Brigade, and mentions a larger original memorial plaque from 1933, which has since been relocated to the Stevenson Memorial Church on Belmont Street.
