The Double Villa, 25 Mansionhouse Road, Glasgow

The Double Villa, located at 25A Mansionhouse Road in Glasgow, was designed by Alexander Thomson between 1856 and 1857. This double villa features a clever design with identical opposing elevations and long walls that each have a single porch near the center, creating the appearance of a single large villa when viewed from either Mansionhouse Road or Millbrae Road. The building is well-preserved and consists of two storeys. It is constructed from snecked, squared rubble with ashlar dressings and incised details. The windows are unmargined with T-shaped glazing and plate glass sashes, showcasing Thomson's early experiments in separating the glazing from the load-bearing structure. The villa has broad-eaved, finialed shallow-pitch slate roofs. The gables feature pilastraded windows, with projecting window bays at the ground floor and grouped windows on the first floor to the right. The chimney cans are also designed by Thomson. The interior of the villa remains mainly intact.
