Description

16-22 Montrose Street in Glasgow was built in 1878 as a warehouse for leather merchants. This five-storey building with an attic features a plain, astylar design and has been converted into flats. The facade is made of polished red sandstone and has a cast-iron frame, with a 20-bay frontage that includes paired windows and a roofline adorned with pedimented dormers.

The ground floor includes shopfronts and entrances at the end bays, as well as paired entrances in the center. All windows are single light arranged in pairs, separated by pilasters, engaged columns, and round-arched lights on the fourth floor. The windows are sash and case with plate-glass glazing. Panelled pilasters highlight the central bipartite and end bays, which also feature pediments above the first-floor windows. There are band courses between the floors and a deep, plain parapet. The pilastered dormers have pediments and urn finials.

The building has slate roofs, and the central bays, which were formerly glazed, have been opened up to create access landings for the flats.
