Description
Montrose House is a 7-storey office block designed by Stuart Sim in 1939 and built after the Second World War. The building features a symmetrical design with a basement and is constructed from ashlar-clad steel framing. Its rectangular elevations consist of 9 bays facing both George Street and Montrose Street. At the corner, there is a recessed taller drum tower with 4 windows and vertical fins. The main entrance is approached by steps at an angle, featuring a modern wrought-iron balustrade, metal-framed revolving doors, and a projecting concrete lintel.
The windows are bipartite in the drum tower and the end bays of each elevation, while the remaining windows are tripartite. All windows have metal-framed casements. In the drum tower, metal bands separate the floors, while the rest of the building is finished in ashlar. The tower is topped with a deep parapet that includes two flag poles.
The rear elevation features a curved glazed stairwell at an angle, with nearly symmetrical flanking bays that have horizontal metal glazing.
