Description
St Anne's Roman Catholic Church, located at 17 and 19 Whitevale Street in Glasgow, was designed by Jack Coia of Gillespie Kidd and Coia and built between 1931 and 1933. The church features a combination of Italianate and early Christian architectural styles, constructed from red brick with contrasting ashlar dressings and topped with red tile roofs.
The church has a nave and aisles with a street-facing elevation that includes a pedimented center supported by consoles. Below this, there is a triple arched portal adorned with carvings by Archibald Dawson. The flanks of the church feature tall round-arched window bays that extend high above the eaves, with transepts extending beyond.
Inside, the church has a wide layout with vaulted roofs and narrow side aisles. The interior is supported by brick piers with carved capitals, and it includes carved Stations of the Cross, also created by Dawson, as well as a baldacchino.
Adjoining the church is a two-storey presbytery that is asymmetrical in design. It features an entrance bay with an arched head, small paned windows with timber mullions and transoms, broad eaves, prominent stacks, and piended roofs.
The property is enclosed by brick perimeter walls, with decorative wrought-iron gates and railings along the roadside.
