Description

Ofice of Public Works, 1922-26. Renaissance detailed library. Single storey 8 x 9 bays. Asymmetrical. Polished ashlar. Casement windows with T-pane glazing, elliptically-headed, dropped architraved, keyblocked. Roll-moulded plinth.

Elevation to Dumbarton Road: 3 bays canted, section at E projecting, facetted W corner section with flanking segmentally pedimented entrance with granite shafted columns. Entablature with sculpted laurel frieze and escutcheon, (enlarged over windows to canted angles), mutule cornice, balustraded die parapet.

W return: 5-bay section repeating main elevation, recessed 3-bay section with lower block in front. Slate roof with skylights. Boundary wall with wrought-iron railings, stone piers to main entrance.

Interior: partially altered. Coved, corniced ceilings with rich plasterwork.
