Description

140 Copland Road in Glasgow is a three-storey and attic brick brush factory, designed by James Chalmers in 1897, showcasing Glasgow-style architecture with ashlar details.

The Copland Road elevation features a low segmental arched entrance set within a Gibbs surround, leading to a square, four-storey tower. To the south, there is an apparently unfinished six-bay section that includes two pilasters from the first floor, topped with unusual scrolled piers above the eaves, which are positioned behind smaller ashlar pilasters. A steep gable caps this section, enclosing three windows that have an ashlar cill course and an oval oculus above.

On the north elevation, there is a stepped circular spiral stair with a lead ogee roof and a ball finial located at the angle of the tower. A tall lift shaft, which has been later heightened, cuts through the eaves. The west elevation consists of five bays, with the end bay set beneath a gable. The west elevation is similar to the north. A small circular chimney is positioned at the southwest corner.

The south elevation has six bays, with the eastern bay under a steep gable that features a blocked ground floor canted bay window. The building has a mansard roof with skylights, originally covered in slate but now clad in corrugated material. Most windows retain their original glazing pattern, although some at the rear have been blocked.
