Description

The Copper Works at 143 Woodville Street in Glasgow consists of two main blocks designed by different architects. The E block, created by R A Wightman in 1900, is a 2-storey, 7-bay structure made of brick that has recently been harled. The ground floor features a finishing shop, where the central door has been replaced by a window, and offices to the east with a corbelled dentil cornice. The first floor also houses a finishing shop, with windows that retain their original glazing pattern, and includes a dentil cornice, the bases of two wallhead chimneys, and a central curvilinear gable with an oculus. The roof has new tiles.

The W block, designed by Arthur D Hamilton around 1910-14, is a 3-storey office building constructed of brick, now harled, with red ashlar detailing. The entrance is located beneath a broken segmental pediment. A large arched window with an ashlar surround leads to a fine stairwell featuring Art Nouveau details. This block has seven ground floor and eight first floor sash and case windows on the west side, along with a dentil cornice. The third floor includes five segmental pedimented dormer windows that break the eaves, flanked by asymmetrical gables—angular on the east and curvilinear on the west, which also features a wallhead chimney. An Art Nouveau bow window is positioned under the curvilinear gable. Some parts of this block may date from 1930. The west elevation is brick, and the gable end has two third floor windows above a larger recessed window. Additionally, two windows on the south side are part of the 1903 steel-framed workshops, which have a brick side wall and a dentil cornice.
