Description
The Manse of St Margaret's Polmadie Church, built between 1897 and 1898 by Peter MacGregor Chalmers, is a Free-style Gothic structure located at 110A Polmadie Road in Glasgow. The church features bull-faced red and grey sandstone with polished red ashlar dressings. Its northern elevation faces the street and includes a gable with a pair of tall lancet windows and a vesica, flanked by buttresses. There is a side chapel on the right, while to the left, a gabled porch has a round-arched opening and engaged columns, leading to a gabled aisle section behind that connects to a hall. The slightly lower chancel at the northwest end is highlighted by a triple lancet window.
The adjoining manse to the south has a two-storey, two-bay street elevation with a corbelled oriel window on the first floor to the right. It features mullioned windows throughout, gabled attic dormers behind a parapet, and a crowstepped gable on the northern elevation. A tall central stack with grouped flues is present, along with a further single-storey hall at the rear, which also contains a former church officers' flat.
The roofs are covered with grey slate, and the manse has a central stack with clay cans, along with cast iron rainwater goods. Inside, the church has a timber hammerbeam roof with arched braces and wrought iron tie-rods, but it has been largely stripped of fixtures and fittings as of 2010. The side aisle was formerly galleried.
