Description
6 and 7 Beaumont Gate in Glasgow are part of a terrace of three-storey and basement tenements designed by G S Kenneth in 1899 and David Barclay in 1902. The buildings feature a total of 20 bays arranged in five asymmetrical four-bay blocks. They are constructed from polished red ashlar, with a stugged finish at the basement level.
The entrance steps extend over the basement and lead to double-leaf panelled doors topped by a moulded lintel and a curvilinear moulding below a multi-pane fanlight. The vestibule door is tripartite, featuring glazed panels and sidelights. Each tenement house is distinguished by full-height four-light bow windows. The fenestration is either bipartite or tripartite, with plate glass sashes; most upper sashes include small pane or leaded glass glazing.
A continuous moulded band course runs above the ground and first floors, complemented by an eaves band and a modillion cornice. The buildings have tall corniced axial stacks and slate roofs, with ceramic cresting along the ridges and finials on the conical roofs over the bow windows.
At the front, there is a solid ashlar parapet leading to steps, and a low coped ashlar boundary and retaining wall for the front gardens, which includes square ashlar gatepiers.
