Description
81-91 St Vincent Street is a commercial building dating from around 1860, designed in the palazzo style by David Rhind, reflecting Italian Renaissance influences. The structure has three storeys and seven bays. The ground floor features modern shop fronts, while the upper levels are constructed of ashlar stone with rusticated quoins.
The central entry at No 87 is highlighted by a pediment and flanked by polished granite Corinthian columns. On the first floor, there is a prominent central three-light window supported by Corinthian columns and pilasters, topped with a sculpted pediment featuring putti. The end windows are tripartite with Corinthian pilasters and segmental pediments, and there are consoled, pedimented windows between them. A Greek-key frieze runs along the second floor cill.
The second floor windows are adorned with elaborate lugged architraves supported by scrolls and sculpted heads, and there is a guilloche frieze and consoled cornice above. Two arch-linked, channelled chimney shafts rise behind the cornice, adding to the building's architectural interest.
