Description
53, 55, 57 Peel Street in Glasgow is a classical tenement building designed by H and D Barclay in 1875. This three-storey structure features an attic and a basement, with a total of thirteen unequal bays. The first, fifth, eighth, and thirteenth bays are shallow and canted. The building is constructed of polished ashlar stone, with a channelled finish at the ground floor, while the rear elevation is made of squared rubble.
The windows are sash and case style, set within architraves, and arranged in a specific pattern of 3-1-3-1-3-3-3-3-1-3-3-1-3. There are alternating main door and close entrances located at the top of steps that oversail the basement area. The ground floor features a plain entablature and pilaster mullioned windows. The first-floor windows are adorned with round-headed sculpted tympana.
The building has a plain eaves entablature and a modillion cornice. It also includes aediculed dormers with two and one light configurations. The roof is slate, and there are axial and end stacks that are corniced.
