8A Sydenham Road, 8, Glasgow

8A Sydenham Road is a Tudor Gothic villa designed by architect J Thomson in 1859. The building is two stories tall, with attics and a basement, featuring an irregular ground plan that includes a single-storey and basement wing to the south and a service wing to the west. The property is set within terraced gardens.

The exterior is constructed of droved ashlar stone with polished margins and dressings, and the elevations are asymmetrical and picturesque, highlighted by high barge-boarded gables. The windows are either bi-partite or quatre-partite, transomed and/or mullioned, with moulded reveals and most featuring hood moulds. There are also some canted oriel and bay windows adorned with decorative moulded frieze cornices or pierced parapet details.

The northeast entrance features a door flanked by stiff leaf capital columns supporting a porch with a pierced balustrade above a four-centre arch doorpiece, which is complemented by double-leaf panelled doors. To the south, there is a single-storey pavilion with a four-centre arched arcaded verandah and a balcony.

The villa has sash windows with plate glass glazing, and some first-floor windows boast good leaded glass in the upper sashes. The steeply pitched slate roofs are accented by corniced stacks with tall Tudor cans, either singularly or arranged in prominent groups.

The terraced garden includes a flight of stone steps with a balustrade and piers. The boundary is defined by corniced octagonal gatepiers and a stugged ashlar wall that steps down the slope, topped with coped piers.
