Description

26 Kingsborough Gardens in Glasgow is a terrace of nine two-bay houses built between 1878 and 1882. Each house is three storeys tall, with an attic and basement, constructed in polished ashlar. The interiors of 14 (now no. 34) Kingsborough Gardens were designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the owner, Robert Rowat, in 1901.

Houses numbered 22 to 36 feature stops that oversail the basement, leading to a stilted arch keystoned doorway adorned with hoodmoulds that end in square stops. This doorway includes a glazed fanlight and a panelled outer door. To the left of the entrance, a canted window extends from the basement to the first floor. The remaining windows are either single or bipartite, positioned in the margins at the second floor, and all are plate glass sash windows. Each house has individual cast iron balconies above the entrance door on the first floor. There is a band course above the ground and first floors, along with a moulded string course at the eaves and a modillion cornice. The roofs are slate, featuring corniced axial stacks and octagonal cans.

No. 38 is slightly different, being three bays wide with shallow advanced steps leading to a similar doorway. To the right, there is a two-storey canted window, accompanied by four single-light windows on the second floor. At the south angle, a corbelled tourelle rises to the second floor, topped with a conical roof. All windows in this house have multi-pane glazing. No. 38 also has a droved ashlar flank with polished band courses and a two-storey projecting bay window that includes a conservatory on the first floor.

Throughout the terrace, there are cast iron railings leading to the steps and basement level.
