Description

South Lodge and gateway at the southern approach to Pollok House were likely constructed as part of the works at Pollok designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson in the 1890s to 1900s. The lodge is a single-storey building, almost square in shape, with a symmetrical three-bay elevation facing the driveway. It features a piended slate roof with paired stacks set back towards the center. The walls are built of rubble with rusticated quoins and have window margins with ingoe moulding that reflects 17th-century details seen at the stables. The windows are 12-paned sash and case. The south elevation, which faces the main road, has a lightweight modern porch on the east wall, while the north elevation, which looks towards the house and grounds, is blank.

The gateway consists of a pair of gatepiers and quadrants, which are not all from the same period. The gatepiers are tall, square in plan, and heavily rusticated, possibly erected when Pollok House was built in the mid-18th century. The sculptured vase finials may not be original. The quadrants are of uncertain date but may also be 18th century; they are convex, made of rubble with ashlar dressings, and feature a single bipartite window on each side, with one side being a dummy or blocked, suggesting that lodges may have previously occupied the area behind. The terminal piers have an unusual design with rusticated stonework similar to that of the gatepiers, located close to the base and top of each. The gate itself is decorative, made of timber and ironwork.
