Description

The Walled Garden at Pollok House, located in Pollok Park, Glasgow, consists of pleasure gardens to the southwest of the house, extending around a hill, with kitchen gardens situated on a south-facing slope. The garden area is bordered to the north by a stone retaining wall and to the south by stables and a driveway/retaining wall. This garden area was likely established early on, with existing walls constructed in stages using rubble, ashlar, and brick, primarily during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The eastmost wall, made of unsquared rubble, likely dates from the 18th century. A garden gateway at the northern end reuses a chamfered doorway from the 17th century, possibly taken from the old Pollok Castle. The retaining wall at the northern end of the kitchen garden is built from coursed and squared rubble. Some brick walls are present, made from mostly narrow, rough bricks that appear to be locally made, along with bands of factory-produced bricks that look 19th century.

A dry-bridge, located near the center at the garden entrance from the stables driveway to the south, is probably from the late 19th or early 20th century. The retaining wall connects the stables to the garden pavilion at the house. Another wall, which appears to be from the 19th century and extends eastward from the garden pavilion, features a long series of square rusticated piers resembling those found in the forecourt of the house, which likely date to the 18th century. At the highest point of the pleasure garden, there is an artificial motte topped with a tree, with a series of steps leading up the slopes. A carved and swagged vase, similar to those on the garden terrace of the house, marks the end of one vista.
