Description

St Columba's Parish Church in Glenrothes, designed by Wheeler & Sproson between 1958 and 1962, is a single-storey church with a centrally planned clerestory. The exterior is harled, featuring a wide timber band above and stained glass in the clerestory, which is now obscured by external corrugated plastic. The building has gabled elevations and lower projecting sections that are also harled. A distinctive tall triangular bell tower is attached to the northwest.

The south elevation serves as the entrance and features a gabled design with a timber band and corrugated plastic covering the upper level. There is a lower projecting blind section with windows in the re-entrant angle, and a central advanced entrance that includes a recessed two-leaf timber door with narrow glazed red inserts. To the left of the entrance is a datestone with a carved Celtic cross and the date "4th June 1960." A simple flat-roofed canopy with slender supports provides shelter at the entrance. To the left, a recessed lower single-storey wing offers access to a large hall that is set at right angles to the northwest and has an asymmetrically pitched roof.

Inside, the church features timber and brick construction, with a Mondrian-inspired Belgian stained glass clerestory and an aluminium roof. There is an en suite timber font, lectern, and communion table, along with a brick and timber pulpit. A notable 51 by 8-foot mural by Alberto Morocco depicts The Way of the Cross, and there are timber pews throughout.

The bell tower is a six-stage steel structure, standing 70 feet tall, with slatted vertical panels on the south elevation.
