Gatepiers And Lodge, West Entrance, Wemyss Castle

The gatepiers and lodge at the west entrance of Wemyss Castle, likely designed by Robert Lorimer in the later 19th century, incorporate earlier materials. This single-storey and attic structure has a rectangular plan and features a crowstepped entrance lodge. The exterior is harled with stone cills and has harled stacks. Currently, all openings are blocked, and the steeply pitched roof is in a derelict state.

On the southwest elevation, there is a door at the center of the ground floor, with a window in the bay to the right and two windows to the left. Above, three regularly spaced windows break the eaves into crowstepped dormerheads.

The gatepiers and gates consist of flat-coped, cavetto corniced, square-section, banded ashlar gatepiers that flank the carriage entrance and outer pedestrian entrances, with cross-banded timber gates. The boundary walls are made of rubble and are topped with ashlar coping.
