Description
The headframe and winding engine house at Frances Colliery in Dysart were built in 1943. The headframe, designed by Dickson Mann Ltd, is a tandem pulley colliery headframe made of steel girders and stands 111 feet high. It features two superposed pulley sheaves of standard colliery type and is oriented southwest to northeast.
The winding engine house is a single-storey structure with a rectangular plan, located to the northeast of the headframe. It is constructed with a steel frame and rendered brick, and has steel casement windows. The roof is made of corrugated asbestos with concrete skews. Inside, there is an electric winding engine, rope, and associated control equipment.
