Description

26-28 Maygate in Dunfermline is an earlier 19th-century, altered, three-storey, four-bay terraced tenement block featuring a ground floor shopfront. The building is constructed of coursed, dressed, droved sandstone, which is painted at the ground floor, with droved ashlar dressings on the principal (south) elevation and harled surfaces at the rear. It has a base course, an eaves band on the principal elevation, and roll-moulded openings at the ground floor.

On the south elevation, there are two entrances at the center of the ground floor shopfront, likely originally serving two shops. Each entrance has a pair of panelled timber doors with glazed upper panels and two-light rectangular fanlights, flanked by shop windows. There is also an entrance to a vennel on the outer right. The shopfront features a late 20th-century bracketed timber fascia. The upper floors have regular fenestration with a window in each bay.

The north elevation includes a semicircular-plan stairtower at the center, with additions to the right. The upper floors of the principal elevation have 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the ground floor shopfront has single fixed frames. The building is topped with a grey slate roof, featuring flanking ridge stacks; the western stack is brick with a band course, while the eastern stack is made of coursed sandstone with a moulded cornice and round cans.
