Torbain Tower, Torbain Farm

Early 19th century, Torbain Tower is a two-stage, square-plan folly, now without a roof. It has crenellated detailing and a full-height circular corner turret to the north side. The tower is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and string courses. It features a variety of narrow arrowslit openings on each stage, with a round-headed bipartite opening near the top of the first stage and a further bipartite opening to the second stage at the southeast. A taller round turret is located at the northeast outer right angle. A timber door with a fanlight sits below square openings on the southwest side, and a single-storey range projects to the northwest. Originally part of the Raith Estate, the tower was built during a period when landowners were improving farmhouses and steadings for tenants. It is one of three follies on the estate; the others are Balwearie Tower and Lambswell, both listed separately.
