House Adjacent To Macdonald And Reid Butcher's Shop, The Cross, Culross

This is a house built in 1909, consisting of two two-storey houses and flat accommodation above what was formerly a butcher's shop, situated on a corner site and forming a roughly semi-circular plan. The exterior is roughcast harled, with stone surrounds to the windows and doors. A stone cornice runs along the principal street-facing elevations.

The northwest elevation, facing Little Haven, has steps leading to an entrance door on the left and a window to the right, both close to the eaves. A large, modern, flat-roofed dormer window is set into the roof. To the right, a separate dwelling is set slightly lower, with a ground floor window and two pitched dormer windows on the first floor. A plaque is set into the gable of the left dormer, and a wallhead stack is located on the right.

The southwest elevation features two adjacent central entrance doors with droved and chamfered surrounds. A large ground floor window is present on the left (formerly the butcher's shop), and another window is located on the right, serving the separate dwelling. The entrance to the former butcher's shop has a tiled interior with plain white tiles, a black band near the eaves, and three decorative coloured glazed tiles of Art Nouveau design. A three-pane fanlight is above the right-hand door. Three regularly spaced first-floor dormer windows are present; the outer dormers have pitched gables, while the central one has a pointed arch. Plaques are set into each dormer head with monograms 'A' and 'D', four diamonds, and 'T' and 'M'.

The southeast elevation has a ground floor window slightly off-centre to the right. A piended two-storey extension projects significantly to the far right, with two ground floor and two first-floor windows. A section of the southeast elevation of Little Haven is visible, with a forestair leading to a first-floor rear door, and windows to the left and right of the forestair, with another window below. A piended, bipartite dormer window is set into the attic. A door to the basement is visible on the left.

The west elevation features a plain gable to Little Haven. The rear of The Cross is set back, centered, with a ground floor window to the right. A slightly advanced first-floor section is present with a door and window. An advanced, piended two-storey section projects furthest to the left, with a first-floor door in its return. A dog-leg forestair leads to a ground floor door, also on the return of the stairs.

The windows are mostly sash and case, with four panes to the rear elevations and six upper panes and two lower panes to the street-facing elevations. Replacement glazing is in the flat-roofed dormer window of Little Haven. Roof lights are present to the front and rear. The roof is piended at the corner and pitched to the east and southeast gables, covered in slate. Wallhead stacks are present on the northwest side, a ridge stack on the northwest, and a gable end stack on the southeast, topped with circular cans.

To the rear, there is a communal drying green, and a tall rubble wall extends southeastwards from the rear garden wall of Tanbrae House to enclose the private garden of Little Haven.

The interior of Little Haven is modern. The tiled floor continues in the former butcher's shop, and a marble window shelf is present. Other areas were not inspected in 2001.
